
“Is it a plant or an animal?” I ask the grade-schoolers mesmerized by the swaying, petal-like tentacles of a giant green anemone.
“It’s green like a plant,” one says. “And pretty like a flower,” another adds.
Despite its floral appearance, Anthopleura xanthogrammica is an animal, with a lineage that stretches back more than half a billion years. But the great beauty of the tidepool is also a great paradox.
Like grass, its color comes from the sun. Like terrestrial blooms, its tentacles open and close. Unlike many animals, it lacks a brain, heart, spine and blood. Yet this elegant cnidarian (the “c” is silent) endures in one of the Pacific’s toughest neighborhoods: the rocky coast of Northern California.
Twice a day, the ocean surges and slackens, submerging tidepool residents and then exposing them to air and sun. Through this constant yo-yo, a sturdy column—up to seven inches wide and twelve inches high—anchors the anemone with a muscular base known as a pedal disc.
When the water recedes, its bright crown of tentacles furls inward to conserve moisture. Its body collapses into an olive-green dome, often camouflaged with pebbles and bits of shell. When the tide floods, the anemone opens again—like a sunflower welcoming the morning light.
As a predator, the giant green anemone relies less on power than proximity. Its sinuous tentacles sway in a languid ballet, but their choreography is strategic. This living fringe, lined with thousands of stinging cells called nematocysts, captures small crustaceans, fish larvae and other floating prey. In an instant, microscopic harpoons fire, injecting toxins that stun and secure the catch.
Anemones don’t manufacture their lime-green color on their own. Within their tissues microscopic algae harvest sunlight and convert it into sugars, supplying their host with energy. In exchange, the anemone offers shelter and access to life-giving light. Together, animal and algae form a partnership so intimate that it blurs the boundary between organism and environment.
Although it appears fixed in place, the anemone can move—slowly. By gliding on its pedal disc, it can shift position to find better light for its resident algae, move closer to food-bearing currents or escape predators that nibble on its tentacles and column.
The rhythms of the sea shape its future. The so-called “flower animal” releases millions of eggs and sperm into the water column, entrusting the tides and currents to carry its offspring outward. Fertilized larvae drift before settling on a hard surface, where they transform into tiny new anemones. No one knows exactly how long they may live. In the wild, some have survived for 150 years.
The giant green anemone cannot think in ways we would recognize, but it responds—to light, to touch, to the chemistry of the surrounding water—with a precision shaped by deep time. To test its sensitivity, I gently place a finger on its oral disc. Protected by my skin from its sting, I register a gentle tug and the slightest electric buzz—faint but unmistakable signs of life.
Watching its graceful swirls, I realize that the beauty of the giant green anemone extends beyond its alluring appearance. What we see in its timeless dance is the accumulated wisdom of evolution, made visible before our eyes.
